That patch seems to have done the trick! I tried the sequence of shell commands that previously triggered the problem in our 2.6.23 kernel and got no panic. I also tried the sequence of commands in the Vyatta config system (which uses unionfs) that tickled the problem, and can't reproduce the panic that way either Thanks for the fix!
