The short answer is: it's not great.

The long answer is: the Debian package maintainer (from where Ubuntu draws
it's packages hasn't moved to the 2.x version of Unionfs.

That's a snapshot from 1 year and 2 days ago! The source code underwent a
major change since then.

I have two suggestions for you:

1) if you want unionfs now, grab the code from unionfs.filesystems.org

2) bug the ubuntu person in change of the unionfs package (I'm not sure how
things work in the ubuntu community) - and tell them that they're missing
out on MAJOR improvements.

The whole situation is rather sad.
