Yes, it does make a difference.  The version of Unionfs used in Ubuntu
7.04 and 7.10 is Unionfs 1.4, which is extremely old.  As it is such
an old version of Unionfs it is unlikely you'll get much interest in
trying to fix any readahead-list issues with it.

Your best option is to update Unionfs in the kernel to the latest
2.1.8 version and try readahead-list with that.  You, however, don't
mention how familiar you are with kernel patching or compiling.
