Similar problem here: invalid modification times on a loaded system.
I had a system which logged a few gigabytes of data per day, concurrently
to three files on a union fs. The files were rotated and post-processed
every hour. New directories were created every day.
After a few days I saw corrupted mtimes, i.e. files in the union whose
mtime did not match any of the mtimes from the underlying branches.
The mtimes were not corrupted randomly though - they seemed to be mtimes
of other files or directories written during the same period.
