A while ago I played around with LTSP and they had a pretty good overview of 
how their system was set up.  Apparabtly the project has changed somewhat 
with Ubuntu integration, but their wiki still has tons of useful info.  Take

LTSP had the NFS root filesystem exported, and they sent the kernel and a 
small install over TFTP.  The small install mounted the big one over NFS and 
then pivot_root'ed.
